SUNBURY— Back to school time is right around the corner and WKOK talked about some kid-approved lunch ideas. Weis Markets Registered Dietitians Kathryn Long and Erin Long, along with intern, Kate Smulligan, were on WKOK Sunrise to talk about food safety and healthy back to school lunches.
Erin talked about how parents can help their kids to try new foods, “Get the kids involved with the planning, what do they want in their lunches? Maybe even have them help make it. Sometimes when kids are involved in preparing food, they’re more likely to try it, or try a new food, because they really feel some ownership over what they’ve made.”
Kate said that parents can change up student’s lunches by making pinwheels, a wrap cut into bit sized pieces. Kathryn talked about some peanut butter alternatives for children, who have nut allergies, “There’s a lot of kids with peanut allergies now. Some schools are even going peanut free, so even if you don’t have an allergy, you’re kid can’t bring a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in. There’s a lot of alternatives. This is WOW butter, and it’s made from soy.”
Weis Markets will be holding a “Build a Better Lunch Box” workshop, sponsored by and held at the Public Library for Union County. It begins at 11:30 on Monday, August 15. Registration is required because spots are limited. To register, call 570-523-1172. (Alyson Holdren)
