Army still investigating ‘runaway blimp’ episode

blimp-photo1-312x220WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Army continues to investigate the ‘runaway blimp’ that crash landed—and caused a lot of damage in our region. In a letter to Congressman Lou Barletta (R-11th, Hazelton), Dr. David Markowitz, assistant deputy chief of staff says the Army is working closely with NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command.

The agencies are investigating how a 243 foot long blimp broke loose from its moorings and floated into Pennsylvania before crashing in Anthony Township, Montour County. Markowitz promises a more complete response to Barletta’s request for information.

Barletta says he “intend[s] to stay engaged with the Army, and hopefully hear an explanation and some new preventative measure to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.” Widespread power outages were reported across The Valley when the mile-long tether on the blimp snagged power lines on October 28.
