SUNBURY – Lots of people in The Valley are unemployed or underemployed because their types of jobs have disappeared…but there are ways to fix that according to members of an employment panel discussion on WKOK.
One way is an apprenticeship, says Chris Ray, Executive Director of the Workforce Development Office at Penn College, “One of those solutions is applying a robust training program, and apprenticeships represent that, where you can build the skills of individuals who don’t have the skill sets upfront and really create that workforce from at least what we have now.”
Bob Garrett, President/CEO of the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, says our Valley vo-tech schools are a good path to obtaining some apprenticeships, “Most of our local vocational schools, in fact the two we are affiliated with, the Sun-Tech and the Northumberland County Vo-Tech, both have what are called matriculation programs, where a student that goes to those vo-tech schools can go right into advanced placement.”
You can hear more from Garrett and Ray from Friday’s On The Mark at WKOK.com.
