AP PA Headlines

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania House of Representatives will return to session for the first time in seven weeks amid a growing budget stalemate. It could vote on a GOP plan to cover a $2.2 billion shortfall by diverting cash from reserves or off-budget programs, many of them for public transportation or environmental cleanups and improvements. Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf opposes it and instead supports a bipartisan tax-and-borrowing plan the Senate approved in July that’s deeply unpopular with House members.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to life in prison plus 10 to 20 years in the 2014 beating death of his former girlfriend’s 3-year-old son near Philadelphia. Gary Lee Fellenbaum III was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the November 2014 death of Scott McMillan in a mobile home in West Caln Township. Under a plea deal, Chester County prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.

NORTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — A bobcat escaped from its enclosure at a Pennsylvania zoo, disrupting patron’s visits and the zoo’s beer festival. Shiska, an 18-year-old female bobcat at the Lehigh Valley Zoo, escaped Saturday through a hole it made between a fence and a tree. WFMZ-TV reports the bobcat got 25 to 50 feet from its enclosure before being captured by handlers about an hour later. No injuries were reported.

New Miss America to be crowned Sunday night in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The next Miss America will soon be crowned, just as a deadly hurricane slams into Florida and not long after another one inundated Texas.

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have been a backdrop to the Miss America preliminary competition this week, with contestants from storm-tossed or threatened states sending messages of support and promises of prayers to those in harm’s way.

Contestants from Texas and Florida have each won a preliminary competition leading into the nationally televised finale.

The winner will be crowned in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall at around 11 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Cops ‘find’ red balloon floating in Stephen King’s hometown

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Police in the Maine city that’s home to Stephen King played a prank to coincide with the opening of the horror film “It,” based on King’s book.

The police department said Thursday on Facebook that a red balloon was “found” floating near the department’s stuffed duck, which has been the department’s mascot over the years.

A red balloon is the calling card of Pennywise, the sewer-dwelling, homicidal clown in “It.” The book is set in Derry, Maine. King has said the fictionalized town is based on Bangor.

Lt. Tim Cotton joked in the Facebook post that the balloon’s discovery was “a little creepy.” He says King says he has “no idea” how the balloon ended up behind the secure doors of the police department.

The feature film “It” opened Friday.
