AP PA Headlines and Sports Scores for Saturday 9/2/2017

HOWARD, CENTRE COUNTY (AP) — New Hampshire authorities say an escaped inmate with tattoos covering his shaved head, face, neck, chest, arm and hands has been arrested in Pennsylvania, three days after he failed to return to a halfway house.  The U.S. Marshals’ New Hampshire Joint Fugitive Task Force says 42-year-old Eric Judkins was found at a residence in Howard, Centre County, Thursday night. He was arrested without incident, as was another man wanted on a probation violation.

Judkins, who failed to return to a halfway house on Monday night, was serving part of a 27-month sentence for assault on a fellow inmate in federal prison.  Authorities say the assault happened while Judkins was serving a 17½-year sentence for a 1999 bank robbery.  Judkins was scheduled to appear in court in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Friday; it wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tests show that the exhumed remains from a suburban Philadelphia grave are indeed those of a 19th century serial killer, quelling rumors that he’d conned his way out of execution and escaped from prison. A judge gave the go-ahead to the exhumation of the remains of Dr. H.H. Holmes earlier this year. Descendants requested it for a series called “American Ripper” on the History Channel. Scientists’ findings were revealed in this week’s final episode.

Conversation starters and Features

DALLAS (AP) — The spike in gasoline prices in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey has hit the accelerator.  The national average for regular was $2.54 a gallon by Friday afternoon, an increase of 18 cents in the last week, according to GasBuddy. In the Central Susquehanna Valley, gas prices jumped 20-30 cents in the past week.

Prices jumped at least 10 cents a gallon in 24 hours in Texas, Ohio, Georgia and the Mid-Atlantic states, travel club AAA reported Friday.  The nationwide average was already higher than most experts predicted as a worst-case scenario when flooding from the devastating storm began knocking out refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast a week ago.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — High anxiety about White House politics, hurricane flooding and even the threat of nuclear war with North Korea is adding an extra spark to the annual burning of a giant, ghostly marionette that serves as an effigy to gloom and doom.  The ritual burning of Zozobra is expected to attract tens of thousands of revelers Friday to a Santa Fe city park for a mixture of wholesome and ghoulish fun.

Inside the six-story puppet are reams of crumpled, handwritten notes about recent troubles and travails that people hope to leave behind in the past.  Worries this year are combustible mix of disenchantment with politics and preoccupation over natural and manmade disaster. Organizers of the event say the elaborate show is a chance to reflect and unburden the soul.

COOPER CITY, Fla. (AP) — A Florida high school junior threw for a touchdown on the very first pass of her high school football career.  It was just the third snap from center for Holly Neher in her debut Thursday night for Hollywood Hills High School. It was a 42-yard scoring play to Alexander Shelton late in the fourth quarter of a 21-7 loss to Hallandale High School.

Neher tells the Miami Herald she was “pretty excited.”   She’s not the first female to play quarterback in Broward County, which is north of Miami in South Florida. But she’s the first to throw a touchdown pass. In 2012, South Plantation’s Erin Dimeglio played quarterback.  Neher finished the game going 2 for 4 with 66 yards — and one touchdown pass.

BERLIN (AP) — The world’s highest sandcastle is now standing 16.68 meters (54.72 feet) tall in the German city of Duisburg.  A German travel operator organized the construction of the mammoth sandcastle, bringing in 3,500 tons of sand over the past 3 ½ weeks to the site at a former steelworks in the inland city.  News agency dpa reported that Jack Brockbank, a representative of Guinness World Records, certified the record on Friday.

It takes the title from a 14.84-meter (48.69-foot) sandcastle built early this year in India.  The new sandcastle is decorated with sand models of tourist attractions such as Athens’ Acropolis, Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  It is supposed to stand until at least Sept. 24..
