SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — An attorney for one of three teenagers charged in the death of a northeastern Pennsylvania police officer who fell 15 feet while chasing them says county prosecutors should be barred from the case because of an ex-prosecutor’s social media posts.  Isiah Edwards’ public defender alleges that posts by former Lackawanna County assistant district attorney Gene Talerico inflamed public sentiment, so the state attorney general’s office should handle the case.

Talerico’s attorney said he was only supporting police and the victim’s family and never disparaged Edwards or spoke about evidence. District Attorney Shane Scanlon said he is looking into the issues.  Edwards and co-defendants Nasiir Jones and Tanner Curtis were 17 at the time of July 2015 death of Scranton officer John Wilding.

Oddities and Conversation Starters

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bill Maher has apologized for using a racial slur on his HBO show.  Maher wrote in a statement Saturday that he regrets using the slur to refer to himself as a house slave during a segment on his “Real Time with Bill Maher” show Friday night. He wrote that he slept poorly Friday night after realizing he shouldn’t have made the remark.

The comedian was roundly criticized after the show aired. HBO said Saturday it would not re-air the segment.  Maher was speaking with Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska when he used the slur.  The comedian immediately waved off audience groans.  Sasse wrote on Twitter that he wished he had immediately criticized Maher for using the term.

MACON, Ga. (AP) – Legendary Southern rocker Gregg Allman has been laid to rest near his older brother Duane in Macon, Georgia, not far from Highway 41.  Thousands of fans lined the streets to honor the “Ramblin Man,” who was carried into Rose Hill Cemetery as a bagpiper played a somber tune.

Family and friends, including musicians who joined the keyboardist in the Allman Brothers Band over the years, gathered on a hillside overlooking his grave, which is shaded by huge oak trees.  Many fans shared memories of concerts, and some blared the band’s songs from their cars and trucks. One woman carried a sign saying “You made our soul shine. We’ll miss you brother Gregg.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A new Kansas museum is giving enthusiasts of late motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel a jump on appreciating his death-defying, bone-breaking exploits.  The $5-million, 13,000-square-foot homage to the man famous for rocket-powered and motorbike stunts before his 2007 death has opened in Topeka.  As president of the two-story museum attached to his Harley-Davidson dealership, Mike Patterson says Knievel memorabilia includes his motorcycles, leathers and helmets.

There also are a virtual reality motorcycle jump, an interactive showing Knievel’s actual X-rays, and an exhibit in which visitors choose their own variables in planning a virtual jump.  Knievel’s Kansas ties include that he traced his career choice to the time he saw George “Joie” Chitwood’s Auto Daredevil Show at age 8. Chitwood, who died in 1988, got his racing start in Kansas…
