AP PA Headlines and Sports Scoreboard for Saturday, September 30

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The Penn State fraternity where a student was fatally injured during an alcohol-fueled pledge night in February is accused of violating local ordinances by renting rooms to alumni during home football weekends.  The citations issued to the Beta Theta Pi house say it needs a new permit to change the occupancy type of a commercial building. They also say it can’t operate as a hotel-type rental without a fire safety program license.

The Associated Press reported earlier this month that alumni had been emailed an offer to rent rooms for prices that ranged from $50 to $350.  Penn State banned the fraternity after the death of 19-year-old engineering student Tim Piazza, of Lebanon, New Jersey.  An email to fraternity lawyers seeking comment about the citations generated no response.

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) — A mystery couple has been picking up the checks for other customers at a southwestern Pennsylvania restaurant.  The couple has been doing that for years at the Applebee’s in Washington, Pennsylvania, but only recently have their good deeds come to light.  Jolie Welling says she was celebrating her daughter’s birthday only to find the couple recently paid the entire tab — for 16 people.

Samantha Powell, the waitress for that party, says the gesture touched her, too, and almost brought her to tears.  Bernie Lewis, the restaurant’s assistant manager, says she has sworn to keep the couple’s secret.  Powell knows them, too, and says they own a local business. She says the man once told her he pays others’ checks because, “I grew up poor and now I’m not.”

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — State health officials have cited Penn State Hershey Medical Center for delays in the care of three patients, including two who died.  The report, released Thursday, stemmed from an unannounced survey conducted in July.  Investigators said a response team should have been called sooner for a 6-year-old boy after coming to the hospital with a high heart rate and other ailments in June. The boy died.

Another patient eventually died after waiting more than two hours for treatment after a fall.  Officials say the hospital did not correctly diagnose a patient who was suffering from a stroke.  The medical center told PennLive the instances are “inconsistent with the high-quality care our community has come to expect from us.”

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An Australian politician is pushing for a Philadelphia medical museum to return the skull of an unknown Australian soldier who was shot in World War I and died days later. Lynda Voltz is a member of the Australian Labor Party and a minister for veterans’ affairs and says having the soldier’s remains at the Mutter Museum is a travesty. The museum said Friday it’s in talks with the Australian Army and the skull hasn’t been displayed “in quite a while.”

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A 14-month-old Tibetan terrier is safe and sound in her new Florida home after surviving Hurricane Irma, numerous thunderstorms and heat.  If Devlyn could talk, her owners — Robin and Dave Saltman of Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville — say she’d tell quite a story.  The Saltmans bought Devlyn from a Houston breeder in August. On Aug. 11, they were letting the dog run around outside and she escaped from their fenced-in yard.

With help from daughter Kari Saltman Keene, they sought help though social media.  The Florida Times-Union reports sightings of Devlyn started coming in. On Day 13, she was spotted 12 miles away. She ran off. Then Hurricane Irma hit. Devlyn was caught two days later.  Now safe, Devlyn has a new leash with GPS tracking capability.

NEW YORK (AP) — Beyoncé is raising her voice to help victims of the series of recent national disasters — literally. She has released a surprise single to raise money for those affected by hurricanes in the Caribbean and earthquakes in Mexico.

The singer is featured on a remix of “Mi Gente,” which means “my people” in Spanish. On the song, released last night, Beyoncé sings in Spanish, English and French. On her website, Beyoncé says she’s donating the proceeds from the track to relief and recovery efforts.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy is keeping his exploration impulses down-to-earth, biking 600 miles across the Amazon to raise awareness about climate change and record its effects.  Cassidy says in Maine, where he grew up, that the world is affected by every action humans take. He is traversing the South American jungle with a team of environmental scientists as part of a documentary.

The Amazon is vital to understanding climate change on a global scale. Scientists say as deforestation destroys more of the massive jungle, there’s less vegetation to absorb carbon. Greenhouse gases that would normally be absorbed are released directly into the atmosphere instead.  The team is biking across the Trans Amazon highway and posting their travels on Twitter under the handle TransAmazon25.

Earlier in the day, the Phillies announced that manager Pete Mackanin would not return to the dugout in 2018. Mackanin was given a role as a senior advisor to general manager Matt Klentak.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jared Gerbino scored on a fourth-and-inches play as time ran out and Dartmouth shocked defending co-champion Penn 16-13 in the Ivy League opener. Jack Heneghan and Gerbino, led the Big Green on a 15-play, 80-yard drive, opting to use Gerbino, the 230-pound backup quarterback, on the final play rather than attempt a tying field goal.
