HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate remained flat in September at a nearly two-decade low, as payrolls rose to a record high. The state Department of Labor and Industry said Friday that Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate stayed at 4.1 percent last month, the lowest point since 2000. The national rate is 3.7 percent. A survey of households found Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force grew by 15,000 to nearly 6.4 million, as employment rose by the same amount and unemployment remained flat at 262,000.
A separate survey of employers showed seasonally adjusted non-farm payrolls rose by 7,700 in September, hitting another record high above 6 million. The biggest gainers were professional and business services, education and health services and the construction sector. Friday’s figures are preliminary and could change.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Businesses and homeowners in Lancaster, York and surrounding counties affected by flooding in August will be eligible for low-interest federal loans.
Gov. Tom Wolf said Friday those areas have been approved for disaster relief to repair damage caused by the severe storms on Aug. 31. Homeowners can borrow up to $200,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate.
Businesses and nonprofits can borrow up to $2 million. Five to 10 inches of rain fell in parts of Lancaster, York and Lebanon counties, causing flash flooding that stranded motorists and led to numerous water rescues. Wolf said the U.S. Small Business Administration approved his request to declare a disaster in Lancaster and York counties
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A new anti-hazing law prompted by the death of a Penn State student after a night of drinking in a fraternity house early last year was signed Friday by Pennsylvania’s governor. Gov. Tom Wolf called it “long overdue” as he put his signature on legislation to enact stricter criminal penalties and permit courts to order confiscation of frat houses where hazing has occurred.
The law is named for Tim Piazza, a 19-year-old sophomore engineering student who died from severe head and abdominal injuries after suffering a series of falls inside the Beta Theta Pi house in February 2017. His parents Jim and Evelyn Piazza, who have become national advocates for anti-hazing efforts, attended the bill signing ceremony in the state Capitol. “Our young people deserve better and we must protect them from this rampant criminal behavior,” Jim Piazza said.
The law requires schools to maintain policies to combat hazing and classifies as felonies the hazing incidents that result in severe injury or death. High schools, colleges and universities are required to report hazing incidents. Authorities said Tim Piazza, who was at the Beta Theta Pi house for a ceremony to accept a pledge bid, consumed a dangerous amount of alcohol before being injured in a fall down a set of basement steps.
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Prosecutors in the Bill Cosby case are calling his bid for a new trial or sentencing hearing “meritless.” Cosby wants a do-over in the Pennsylvania sex assault case that ended with him going to prison last month to serve a three- to 10-year sentence. His lawyers say Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill made mistakes that should invalidate the conviction and punishment.
A jury found Cosby drugged and molested his accuser. District Attorney Kevin Steele in a memo Friday says Cosby’s objections are “time-worn” and have been rejected previously. The defense says Cosby’s 2015 arrest may have come too late because it’s unclear when the encounter took place. But Steele notes that Cosby himself said in a deposition it occurred in 2004 — within the 12-year window to file charges.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Supermodel Karlie Kloss has married businessman Joshua Kushner. Kloss posted a photo of her in a wedding dress and Kushner in a tuxedo — both of them beaming — on Instagram and Twitter Thursday night. People magazine reports the couple married at a small ceremony in upstate New York and will have a larger ceremony in the spring.
Kloss’ publicists did not return an email seeking details about the wedding Thursday. Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and one of his senior advisers. Kloss has modeled for Victoria’s Secret and numerous luxury brands, and will be the new host of “Project Runway.”

Aguilar supplied a two-run double while the Brewers were batting around in a four-run first, a half-inning after David Freese (freez) led off with a home run. Wade Miley allowed two runs and five hits over 4 1/3 innings before Milwaukee’s bullpen tossed no-hit ball the rest of the way.
