SUNBURY – Another phone scam is being reported in The Valley. Northumberland County district attorney Tony Matulewicz says a Shamokin man was contacted by an individual claiming to be a government official. The caller told the man the government would pay him a reward of $10,000 if he paid his taxes and bills on time. The victim called the Northumberland County district attorney’s office after being instructed to purchase an iTunes gift card worth $200, in return for an award.

Matulewicz says the most common scams include callers identifying themselves as government officials, or from the IRS, and asking for paid advances to receive rewards or other prizes. Residents should never respond to phone requests from as these agencies. (Alyson Holdren)
