SHAMOKIN – The second fatal overdose attributed to heroin has been reported in Shamokin. Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley says a 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at a home on East Commerce Street Tuesday. Based on evidence at the scene, Kelley says the death is attributed to “Heroin Toxicity”. Toxicology testing is being performed.
Another overdose death was reported on Friday, when a 27-year-old Shamokin woman was found in an apartment on West Independence Street. Heroin is suspected in that death also. The deceased were not identified by the coroner.
Kelly posted on Facebook this week that in the past 5 weeks, the coroner’s office has certified two deaths from “Heroin Toxicity”, one of which was laced with Fentanyl, and is investigating two other suspected drug-related deaths, one from heroin and one from crystal meth. (Ali Stevens)
