SUNBURY — It’s a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages — trout fishing.  Dean Hollenbach, of Hollenbach’s Bait and Tackle in Sunbury, says Saturday is the opening day of trout season and people are excited.

“With the early opener down south and the mentor program they started for kids this year, it has actually been almost double business.  People are coming in on a regular basis,” Hollenbach said. “There are a few guys who are really looking for a big brown trout this year.  There are some big palominos out there.  They really enjoy going after the big ones.  The kids are happy just catching anything, and the older guys want to catch a big one.”

Hollenbach said fishing is a great activity, because everyone can do it, it’s not too expensive, and it gets the kids outside.  He said it is the perfect bonding opportunity for families.

“It gives them a closeness,” he said.  “With most team sports kids do, parents are sitting on the sidelines and someone else is coaching their children through it.  With fishing, they can be right there with them.  At a younger age they can hold their hand and teach them how to fish, and as they get older they can enjoy every moment sitting right along beside them.”

Hollenbach says wax worms seem to be the most popular bait at his store this year.  Since mid-February, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has stocked waterways with a fresh supply of brook, brown and rainbow trout.  Trout season officially opens at 8:00a.m. Saturday, and Hollenbach’s Bait and Tackle will be open all night Friday for the occassion.  (Codi Jade)
