Accused New Jersey Killer Captured Locally

SHAMOKIN – An accused murderer from New Jersey was arrested in Northumberland County Friday.

The US Marshals Service says they’ve been looking for 43-year-old Aswad Spruiel of Plainfield, New Jersey, and while they don’t say why he was in our area, he was picked up in the 200 block of South Coal Street in Shamokin Friday.

Spruiel was wanted for a killing last July in Plainfield, New Jersey authorities say he has an extensive history of violent crime, so the Marshals deployed a ‘Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force’

They say he’s facing first degree murder and lesser charges; he’s jailed in the Northumberland County prison awaiting extradition back to New Jersey.

The Marshals say their task force is made up of 22 state, county, and local police agencies including Williamsport city police, state police and the state board of probation. They also say the Berwick police and Union Co Sheriffs all participated in this investigation.
