Accident closes Route 61 over the weekend

FEAT_ACCIDENTGENERICCOAL TOWNSHIP – A two-vehicle crash closed Route 61 in Shamokin for several hours over the weekend. Coal Township police say 18-year-old Rebecca Wargo of Coal Township passed a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Cory Hoffman of Kulpmont as both were travelling north on Route 61 around 10:30p.m Saturday night. According to the News Item, the brakes on Wargo’s vehicle failed, she struck Hoffman’s car, went off the road and hit a utility pole.

The utility pole cracked at the bottom and was hanging over the roadway. Crews worked through the night to replace the pole, but Route 61 was closed until about 11:30a.m Sunday.

Wargo was transported to Geisinger Medical Center where she was treated and released. Hoffman and his passengers were not injured in the accident.
