Northumberland County Jail Considers Housing ICE Detainees

SUNBURY — Northumberland County officials are discussing a possible agreement to house federal immigration detainees at the county jail.  According to the Standard-Journal, Jail Warden Brian Wheary told the prison board talks with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement are preliminary.

County Commissioner Joe Klebon says ICE could pay $150 or more per bed per day, even if beds go unused. He says the county’s new jail and central location make it attractive. No detainees are housed yet, and Klebon says an agreement could move quickly or not happen at all.
