HARRISBURG – A lot of vehicles have already hit deer this year, and that number is likely to grow. Deer are becoming more active due to the fall breeding season, known as the rut.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission urges motorists to stay alert, especially as daylight-saving time ends on Nov. 3, increasing traffic during peak deer movement times at dusk and dawn.
Pennsylvania leads the nation in animal-collision insurance claims, with a 1-in-61 chance of a vehicle-deer accident. Drivers can reduce risks by slowing down, staying cautious in marked areas, and remembering deer often travel in groups, so more could follow the first deer crossing the road.
If necessary, call the Game Commission Game Commission at 1-833-PGC-HUNT or call PennDOT to report a dead deer at 1-800-FIX ROAD.
