Training Facilities Proposed near Northumberland County Jail

Training Facility, Shooting Range Proposed near North’d Co. Jail

SUNBURY – A training facility for firefighters and shooting range for law enforcement has been proposed in Northumberland County. County commissioner Joe Klebon made the proposal during this week’s county prison board meeting.

Klebon tells WKOK there’s still quite a bit of acreage not being used at the county’s prison campus – enough to build a training facility for firefighters and a shooting range to train members of the county sheriff’s department, county police and probation officers and others. However, talks on the proposal are in the very beginning stages.

Klebon says this idea is ‘definitely needed’ and would be a good investment to the county’s first responders. He says Clint Herr, the head of the county’s fire chiefs, told the county crews have had to go other places for training. Klebon says he, Herr, and county Public Safety Director Steve Jeffries visited the potential site this week.

Klebon says funding would be a collaboration of possible PEMA, state and federal grants. He says exact costs for the potential project are unknown.
