Historic Lewisburg Tour Returning Soon
LEWISBURG – The Historic Lewisburg Tour is returning soon. The Lewisburg Downtown Partnership says the event returns Saturday, September 17; it’s also parents weekend at Bucknell University, which is when the tour originally would take place.
Judy Wagner, former mayor of Lewisburg and a member of the partnership’s historic tour committee says there are 10 buildings to see, including the William Cameron Engine Company building and fire museum.
“Originally, the William Cameron Engine Fire Company was located on South Fourth Street, but unfortunately we lost it. It’s reemerged on North Fifth Street and is now the home of William Cameron Fire Company and the fire museum,” she said.
Wagner says William Cameron will be a big part of the tour, and you’ll see the Cameron-Cook house along the way, “He is responsible, in many ways, for the growth of Lewisburg. His house was built in the 1840s and was redone in 1872. It’s still an amazing structure. It contained the first bank of Lewisburg, The Dime Bank. You can still see the vault.”
Wagner says Betty Cook also played a big role in Lewisburg’s history, “Who in her late 20s saw that the house was to be torn down. We didn’t have any historic commission at the time. So Betty went to the bank and got a loan, and as a single woman that was not an easy task. So Betty got the loan and saved the house from being torn down and becoming a gas station. She has loved and cherished that house. Of course, Betty is the first lady of Lewisburg.”
Wagner says the Lewisburg Hotel is also part of the tour. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at lewisburgpa.com or the day of the tour at 328 Market Street.
