COVID Vaccines, Masking Still Important Says UPMC Doc

WILLIAMSPORT – Despite getting infected with COVID-19 one or multiple times while vaccinated and boosted, it’s still important to remember your symptoms won’t be as severe.

That’s the message from Dr. Rutul Dalal, Medical Director of Infectious Diseases at UPMC Williamsport, “I know people are disappointed that even the president of the country got infected despite being vaccinated and boosted, but again, as you’ve seen, people are not getting as sick, and that’s the real thing the vaccination has to do.”

He adds even if people are infected with COVID two or three times, having a booster decreases chances of severe infection.

As more booster shots become available, Dr. Dalal says patients should still be mindful of when theirr last booster was, “Typically, when you get a booster in, you have to wait up to six months. But after six months, there’s a lapse, so then you should probably go ahead and get it.”

This comes as the new booster against the original COVID virus and the omicron variant should be available to the U.S. in September.

As for whether we should still mask, Dr. Dalal says people no longer masking on public transportation is a concern; and everyone should wear a mask indoors, unless you’re well spread out from others.
