SUNBURY – Crack down on criminals, not on what they’re using to put others in danger…That continues to be the viewpoint of U.S. Congressman Fred Keller (R-12th, Kreamer) when asked about the bipartisan framework recently announced on gun reform.
“I’m going to quote Ronald Reagan. ‘We need to stop blaming society when someone breaks the law, and we need to restore the American precept that an individual’s accountable for their own actions.’ We need to hold him accountable for that. It’s tragic what happens when people get harmed, but let’s focus on the individual and what they’re doing and not the instrument they’re using,” he said.
Cong. Keller says there are ways to be better prepared against school shootings, but that shouldn’t include infringing on gun rights, “We want our schools to be safe and I know there’s been a lot of talk about how we do that.”
“Is that enabling people in the schools to be able to carry once they’re qualified to do that and keep people safe? That might be some things we can do. But we should not be infringing upon anybody’s law-abiding citizen’s right to keep and bear arms.”
Keller recently visited Sunbury for the dedication of the new city police building to the late former mayor Jesse Woodring.
