Sen. Gordner Co-Sponsored PA Abortion Amendment
HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania voters could be the ones who decide if the state Supreme Court or the legislature decides on abortions.
State Senator John Gordner (R-27th, Berwick) told WKOK’s On The Mark he’s co-sponsored an amendment to the State Constitution with State Senator Judy Ward (R-30th, Blair County), “The idea is that a state court should not make any final decision. It should be done through the legislative process and also saying there is no constitutional right to a taxpayer funded abortion in the state of Pennsylvania.”
Senator Gordner says he supports the bill because it lets the voters decide. He says constituents were even polled on the idea of drafting this amendment and its wording, “Not a large majority, but a slight majority said they would support it in the way it was drafted. This wouldn’t take away anything that currently exists in statue in regards to our current abortion laws. It goes back to Governor (Robert) Casey (Sr.), a Democrat.”
The state’s current abortion laws say abortions are legal up to 24 weeks and there are other different provisions.
Senator Gordner says the bill was introduced prior to the leaked draft of the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade case. He says their decision wouldn’t affect the proposed amendment to the state constitution.
