Compromise ‘On the Table’ on Gun Control
WASHINGTON, D.C. – There is a chance we’ll see some sort of gun control legislation come out of Washington. CBS News Political Analyst Leonard Steinhorn told WKOK’s On The Mark it’s not everything that Democrats want, but enough for compromise.
“What maybe on the table is expanding background checks for people 18-21 years old, not a national red flag law but incentives for states to be able to pass red flag laws, certain measures to help secure schools a little bit, and some mental health measure,” he said.
Thanks to the bitter partisan divide, he says no one is really interested in compromise on Capitol Hill, “With gerrymandering and congressional districts, what you have now are so many ‘safe seats,’ meaning that if someone actually compromises, they’re worried they could get primaried in their district and therefore, face somebody more conservative or somebody far more liberal and not be able to win the primary and get re-elected.”
Prof. Steinhorn says lawmakers should even give the same attention to the idea of compromise as they do other current key issues, “So if the January 6 committee is going to say, ‘we have threats to our democracy,’ I’d love to see another commission that basically talk about the threats to our democracy, which is the inability to talk with each other and the increasing difficulty in politics to be able to compromise.”
