Susquehanna University Hosts Commencement Weekend

500+ Degrees Earned from Susquehanna University

SELINSGROVE – More than 500 new graduates of Susquehanna University received degrees Saturday and some Valley residents received special recognition in the ceremony.

University officials said the weekend began with an awards luncheon Friday afternoon and baccalaureate ceremony that evening. They said Saturday kicked off with a brunch, followed by commencement exercises in the Field House and a special reception on the campus center patio.

Larry Czeponis of Mount Carmel, who served on the university board as a student representative, received degrees in political science and international studies. In his commencement speech, Czeponis said, “It amazes me how a place so small can cram in so much incredible talent, intelligence, advocacy, creativity and compassion within its borders.”

Long-time SU supporter and emeritus board member James Summer, who graduated from the university in 1964, received an honorary degree during the ceremony.

Of the six valedictorians chosen from the Class of 2022, two are Valley residents. Kyler Balliet of Northumberland received a dual Bachelor of Science degree in business data and computer science; and Olivia Lee of Selinsgrove earned a B.S. in elementary education.

University President Jonathan Green congratulated the class for overcoming so many obstacles during their time at Susquehanna, adding, “I believe you are capable of relegating our worst times to the past . . . because I have witnessed your kindness, your compassion, your passion and your goodness countless times as we have journeyed together.”
