Military Appreciation Month: Sunbury VFW Post Renewing

SUNBURY – A VFW in Sunbury dates back to the late 1800s and is currently undergoing some revitalization…and they are looking for new members. Jody Ocker is Chaplain of the Thomas-Brill VFW Post 1532 on Shikellamy Avenue in Sunbury, “First of all, it’s smoke free.”

“We have a beautiful deck outside and we’ll have music, entertainment, all that this summer. We have a picnic pavilion we’ve made improvements to, added a fire pit, improvements to the kitchen, and pretty soon you’ll see the exterior of the building change,” she said.

Ocker says a big part of the renewal efforts were spearheaded from a generous donation via an estate of a late veteran. Along with the facelift, Ocker says new members are welcome, and that includes not only (and especially) veterans who served overseas conflicts, but auxiliary or social members too.

She says the VFW dates back to 1899 after the Spanish-American war, “Their mission is to foster that camaraderie among veterans who’ve served in overseas conflicts and advocate on behalf of all veterans. The VFW Post 1532…Thomas-Brill…that’s two separate last names not one person…but is named after two soldiers who died in World War I.”

Ocker says the organization is always interested in helping any veteran in need, “So it can be anything from a disabled veteran that needs help with accessibility in his home, cleanup a yard, car repair, really almost anything. They just need to let us know.”
