SUNBURY – May is Military Appreciation Month. Scott Fabrizio, of Freedom Fighter Outdoors brought his message to WKOK Sunrise recently. The organization helps wounded vets enjoy outdoor activities, including fishing, shooting, and hunting. Martz Gap View Hunting Preserve has hosted their hunts:
“We are a natonal 501C3 group. We take wounded combat veterans on all-expenses paid outdoor adventures, such as hunting, fishing, some sporting events, and concerts. We have an event coming up in September and we’re looking to do some trap shooting. These are all-expense paid events, including room and board, hunting equipment, and gas for the trip. We want the veterans to come out and have a good time, talk to other veterans, and wake up and talk about what their experiences were.”
Freedom Fighter Outdoors is based in Florida, but Fabrizio emphasized that the activities and funds raised locally, stay local. Area venues and businesses continue to support their work. He says veterans have given so much for our country; we need to show how much we appreciate their service through events they enjoy:
“One of my best friends, EJ Carpentier, went on this hunt, and he came back and just hearing the excitement and everything he was telling me about, I had to get involved. I had to help. And I feel that more people should help.”
On September 19, FFO will host a fundraiser at Penn’s Tavern to honor the late Neil Mertz, owner of Mertz Rod and Gun. Mertz served in the US Coast Guard. Proceeds go to Freedom Fighter Outdoors. He says they have have to work to get veterans to sign up:
“Believe it or not, that’s one of the toughest parts we have is getting veterans to sign up because most of them will say, ‘Hey, give it to someone else.’ And we want those guys to come out and experience the good times.”
