CBS’ MacFarlane, ‘A Real Blockade’ Will Stay In U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Don’t look for much to get through the US Congress anytime soon… CBS News congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane painted a bleak picture of the near impossibility of any legislation getting to the President’s desk.

MacFarlane told WKOK’s On The Mark recently, there’s ‘zero chance’ an abortion rights bill would get passed now or later, no matter who’s in charge, “You need 60 votes to do anything in the U.S. Senate of consequence, and there’s just not 60 votes for anything, anything close to the divisiveness and political toxicity of abortion rights.”

MacFarlane says you can say the same for bills that would ban abortion as well, “There’s just not a bridge across the party on abortion rights. But that being said, they can’t pass small things right now because of that 60 vote threshold in other important matters, like COVID relief. It’s real blockade in the U.S. Senate.”

MacFarlane says voters should consider this when voting in next week’s Pennsylvania U.S. Senate primary, look for candidates who have a results orientation, rather than just a partisan interest “Pennsylvania has one of…six senators who represent states who voted for the other party in the presidential election. It’s obviously Senator Toomey (R-PA) in Pennsylvania’s case…looking for this very small number of senators who have potential to work with the other party.”

MacFarlane says there is bipartisan agreement to address border security, specifically concerns lifting Title 42.
