This Saturday, Flood Resilience Fest Comes to Selinsgrove

Community Involvement for Flood Safety

SELINSGROVE – Floods have destroyed many families’ properties and lives, such as Hurricane Agnes 50 years ago. On May 7 from 10am-2pm on the Isle of Que in Selinsgrove, a Flood Resilience Fest will take place to help people get information about the history of floods, how to prepare, and how to recover from floods.

Lara Fowler, senior lecturer at Penn State Law and assistance director of the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, and affiliate faculty of Penn State School of International Affairs tells us more about the happenings of the Flood Resilience Fest. She says that a more set schedule of events will be provided next week, but the event is informal to entice more people to attend the fest near the Isle of Que boat launch:

“Information from 8 to 10 different organizations. We’re going to actually have some big maps of the area so people can draw on them and to have a conversation about flood impacts, to share information, and to answer questions,” she said.

Andrew Stuhl, associate professor and department chair of Environmental Studies & Sciences with Bucknell University tells us that Selinsgrove residence that have moved to the area within the last 10 years should attend the fest to learn from their neighbors. It is not only neighborly, but people could learn information that could save them from life or death flooding situations:

“Learn from the neighbors who are lifers, who are river rats, who know their land so well that they would know they have six hours to go until the water creeps up their driveway. Learn from each other because it will come in handy,” he said.
