LEWISBURG – Food insecurity within the Valley is an issue that the Union-Snyder Community Action Agency, Penn State Extension and The Miller Center program are working on, they are holding a free Seed to Supper course this month.
“Free, beginner gardening course offered to people or families on a low income. We are teaching them how to grow their own foods, as well as how to harvest and prepare foods,” Sabrina Holmes, Master Gardener and Snyder/Union County Coordinator tells us.
She tells us that food insecurity affects around 9,000 people in Union and Snyder County and their goal is to promote healthy, home-grown, food options for families. She tells us the free programs start April 7 and continues every Thursday evening until May 12.
Rachael Herman, Sustainable Food Solutions VISTA and Union/Snyder Community Action Agency staff says, “We’ll do a planning your garden class first and from there, we will go on to healthy soils. We’ll have a planting your garden class then the next one will be caring for your garden. And then, the final class will be harvesting and using your bounty.”
She tells us that slots are still available to sign up for the Seed to Supper classes and can sign up by contacting her at (570)556-4757 or via email at smw5542@psu.edu. Herman says that there is no need to bring anything to the classes, except a good attitude and excitement to learn about gardening.
