Geisinger Doc “Somewhat Optimistic’ Pandemic Could End

DANVILLE – So they’re saying there’s a chance COVID could be over.  Dr.  Stanley Martin, Geisinger’s Director of Infectious Diseases told WKOK Sunrise recently we have reason to be ‘somewhat optimistic’ we’ll see an end to the pandemic.

“We have had a significant amount of immunity established in the community through vaccination and exposure to the virus, and that bodes well for preventing some of the more serious complications in the coming months,” he said.

But Dr. Martin says the virus won’t just ‘go away,’ “Immunity does tend to wane over time and we still have enough virus and enough susceptible folks in our population that the virus is likely to continue to circulate. But, if the numbers stay low and we can provide enough immunity, then perhaps it won’t be as serious down the line.”

Dr. Martin says we should still stick with all the virus protection protocols, such as masking indoors, especially in areas of high spread.  He also says people who are more susceptible to the virus should still be extra cautious.
