Latest on Rail Trail from Sunbury to Mount Carmel

Upcoming Community Growth in Northumberland County

SUNBURY  – Within a month, Northumberland County will have the results of the feasibility study of a rail trail between Sunbury and Mount Carmel.

“The idea for the trail is to create a recreational opportunity for the benefit of the public and to create economic development through tourism. The trail would be following the old Philadelphia-Reading railroad, that is just a tentative route and it can be subject to change.”

Justin Skavery, Planning Coordinator, Northumberland County Planning Commission tells it would benefit the community economically. He says rail trails bring about $3.4 billion nationally per year into the US economy through tourism and bringing traffic to local business. Additionally he says businesses, such as bike and outdoor recreational shops, will be more inclined to open in the area.

“There is a lot of natural and historical landscapes that this trail would be in close proximity to and the hopes are to promote these landscapes and historical sites to the public so they can get a better understanding and feel for the area,” he said.

He encourages all comments and feedback via email, justin.skavery@norrycopa.net.
