SABER, Revitalization Efforts Gaining Lots of Momentum

Revitalizing Shamokin Efforts Continue

SHAMOKIN – The City of Shamokin is quickly becoming ‘The City of Energy,’ as revitalization efforts are intensifying and many people taking notice.

Kathy Vetovich is the President of the Shamokin Area Business for Economic Revitalization or SABER. She says they even have added in a new and now award-winning ‘Go Shamokin’ plan to help guide the growth, “This ‘Go Shamokin ‘plan is really driving that strategy. That’s what we were missing before SABER and its exciting.”

Vetovich says outside investors are helping, and many people from long distances around the area are starting to come back to the city, “We bought a building and we opened, ‘Heritage Restaurant.’ Ale House Bar and Grill opened right about the same time. Lost Mind is the first brewery in Shaman in 46 years. We already have had Brewsers Sports Grill.”

It’s not all business growth; she says there are also investors fixing up homes in the city.

Vetovich says organizers are also grateful for help from local economic developers like the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, SEDA-COG and more, “We have the visitors bureau, with have SEDA-COG, its everybody saying, ‘hey let me get a piece of this and help.’ I think one of the struggle is those of us who are involved want it to g faster. We don’t even know where the end is yet, but we want that momentum to continue.”

Kathy Vetovich. President of SABER says SEDA-COG has been particularly helpful with blight removal efforts. Vetovich also says the city is also hoping for federal infrastructure dollars with the help of U.S. Congressman Dan Meuser (R-9th, Dallas.)
