SUNBURY – Numerous firefighters converged on Sunbury again Friday afternoon because of the second damaging house fire in two days.
Crews fought windy conditions, the close proximity of neighboring homes, and the generally low number of personnel available weekday afternoons, to make what Sunbury First Assistant Fire Chief Ron Rupp called ‘A good stop.’
The fire was at 634 Susquehanna Avenue at around 2pm. Rupp said there were multiple apartments in the building and the fire was in a second floor bedroom. He said the fire did extend to the attic, the first floor and out a window—where it caught a neighboring home on fire.
Two alarms were sounded, bringing to the scene fire companies from Sunbury, Northumberland, Point Township, Shamokin Dam, Selinsgrove, Upper Augusta Township, Kratzerville (rehab unit), Elysburg (RIT), Kulpmont, Lewisburg, New Berlin, Milton, Coal Township and Shamokin.
No injuries were reported. The home is uninhabitable now but can be repaired in the estimation of assistant chief Rupp. He said the Red Cross is helping six individuals in the home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and a state police fire marshal will assist.
Initially, dispatchers were told of a possible entrapment in the home but everyone was accounted for.
The neighboring home sustained exterior damage but still can be occupied.
The night before, on Augusta Street in Sunbury, a home was damaged by a fire that sent one person to Lehigh Valley Hospital.
