Lawmakers Help Kick Off Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign

Salvation Army Begins Annual Red Kettle Campaign

SUNBURY – Bells will be ringing . . . Salvation Army’s 2021 Susquehanna Valley Red Kettle Campaign has officially begun and soon Valley businesses will be hosting volunteer bell ringers collecting donations.

Three state lawmakers were the first to offer monetary donations Friday. State Senator John Gordner (R-27th, Berwick), State Rep. David Rowe (R-85th, Lewisburg) and State Rep. Lynda Schlegel-Culver (R-108th, Sunbury) joined Salvation Army Lt. Jared Starnes and Major Tammy Hench for the kickoff in Sunbury’s Cameron Park.

Starnes heads up the Milton Salvation Army, which has a goal of $35,000 for this year’s campaign. He said funds collected throughout the holidays help Valley residents all year long, “We help our community in a lot of ways –  after-school kids’ programs, regular social services throughout the year, where we help people with rent, electric bills and stuff like that. This campaign is how we can continue to do that.”

Major Hench leads the Sunbury Salvation Army, which she said now includes the Shamokin area, so the goal is $50,000. She said this is a very special time of year, “It’s just a beautiful time of year for the Salvation Army. It’s a lot of work but it’s got a lot of rewards to it, and I’m just so thankful that we’re here doing it. It means the world to me.”
