COVID Numbers High, Over 5,200 New Statewide COVID-19 Cases

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s new set of daily statewide COVID-19 cases are back over 5,000, continuing a surge in cases.

In Thursday’s update the state Department of Health says there were 5,293 new statewide cases of COVID-19 since Wednesday.  The total number of Pennsylvanians who have contracted the disease since the pandemic began 1,613,315 (92% recovery rate).

There were 125 new Valley cases since Wednesday – this comes after the area had the largest one-day increase in more than a month. Thursday’s total includes 79 in Northumberland County (13,450 total since the start of the pandemic); 22 in Snyder County (4,940 total); 14 in Union County (7,700 total); and 10 Montour cases (2,609 total).

There were also 73 new deaths reported throughout the commonwealth since Wednesday.  That brings to 32,261 the number of Pennsylvanians who’ve died from COVID-19.

There was one new local death to report in Union County, now with 106 total deaths since the start of the pandemic. Northumberland County remains with a total of 409, Snyder County has 107 and Montour County remains with 73 deaths.

In Thursday’s update as well, COVID-19 hospitalizations slightly increased again by 21 to 2,609 total. There are now 600 COVID-19 patients in ICU throughout the state, with 345 people on ventilators.

According to Thursday’s report, Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg is treating a total of 28 – 18 of those whom are unvaccinated. They have seven COVID-19 patients in the ICU – five unvaccinated- and three on ventilators – two are unvaccinated.

Geisinger is still treating 67 COVID patients. 25 of those patients are in ICU, with 13 on ventilators. Geisinger Shamokin is treating 11 patients total, with none in ICU or on ventilators.

Valley universities’ COVID updates remain the same; Bucknell still has eight active cases on campus (five students, three staff), with 91 total cases since the semester began. They note that 94.6% of the students and faculty are fully vaccinated.

Susquehanna still has five active student cases and one active employee cases (45 total since August 2). The campus vaccination rate is 95.6%.

Bloomsburg University reports five new cases, with 260 total since the start of the fall semester.

In vaccine data as of Wednesday, there are more than 14.3 million total doses of the vaccine have been administered throughout Pennsylvania since the pandemic began, which includes 1,001,766 booster doses for the immunocompromised and over 6.5 million fully vaccinated (72.8% are 18 and older).

In the last two days, there were 1,759 new Valley vaccine doses administered. Montour County has 86 more doses, with 27,907 total doses administered (12,739 partial, 12,453 fully, 2,715 additional), Northumberland County has 653 more doses, with 98,108 total doses (43,618 partial, 46,689 full, 7,801 additional), Snyder County has 339 more doses, with 33,038 total doses (15,131 partial, 15,376 full, 2,531 additional), and Union has 681 more doses, with 42,621 total doses (19,284 partial, 19,562 full, 3,715 additional).
