Sunbury church celebrating lighting of steeple and spire

SUNBURY – Some new lighting is going to help a Sunbury church reach out into the community. The First Reformed Church, United Church of Christ at Second and Chestnut Streets  is planning an event to celebrate the lighting of its steeple and spire. The so-called “inSPIREd” interfaith-friendly event is Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Pastor Janna Born Larsen, “We’re going to start in the sanctuary. We’ll be there for about 20 or 25 minutes. And then we’re going to cross the street to the municipal parking lot. We’ll do a countdown to the lighting of the spire. Hopefully it’ll be noisy when the lights go on.”

Pastor Larsen says the lighting of the steeple and spire represents three aspects of welcome, “We’ll basically be offering three different ways of seeing that spire. One is as a symbol of welcome to Sunbury. Another is as a symbol of faith to people of all faiths, and also for Christians, it’s offered as a symbol of the Light of Christ.”

There will be light refreshments afterwards in the church’s Fellowship Hall. The event also kicks off the 500th anniversary of Reformation Day. For more information, call the church at 570-286-2712.
