Shamokin Council Candidate Withdraws

SUNBURY – Officials say an embattled Shamokin City Council candidate has withdrawn his nominating petitions after the county DA said the candidate would be charged criminally if he didn’t do so.

Northumberland County Chief Registrar Lindsay Phillips told WKOK Thursday; Joseph Leschinskie withdrew his petitions before Wednesday’s deadline. Phillips said she just accepted the withdrawal and didn’t ask for a reason.

This comes after the Northumberland County District Attorney sent a letter to Leschinskie March 13 ordering him to withdraw within 10 days or face criminal charges.

We last told you Leschinskie filed nominating petitions for Shamokin City Council despite being deemed ineligible by county DA Tony Matulewicz. The prosecutor said in the letter to Leschinskie last week, a March 2022 court order ruled Leschinskie ineligible because of his two prior convictions of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, both graded as felonies.
