LEWISBURG — The regional Lutheran synod in this part of the state will get some help to revive congregations. The Upper Susquehanna Synod includes most of the Lutheran churches in the regional ten county area. They received a $20,000 grant to strengthen lay leadership and expand ministry in rural communities.
Chad Hershberger, a spokesman for the synod, said the funding, through Wartburg Theological Seminary’s CaSTLE Project, will support “The Priesthood of All of USS.” He says they’ll be working on equipping lay worship leaders, mentors, and emerging leaders to serve in new and alternative faith communities.
Organizers say the initiative will also focus on engaging young adults. A summer gathering of grant recipients is planned this August in Iowa. The synod serves 112 congregations across ten central Pennsylvania counties.
