Third Day in a Row of Over 100 Statewide COVID Deaths

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania has recorded over 100 new COVID-related deaths for the third straight day. There have been about 400 deaths recorded this week.

In Thursday’s update, the State Department of Health said there were 108 news deaths reported statewide since Wednesday. That brings the statewide total to 30,336 deaths in Pennsylvania attributed to COVID-19.

There were two new deaths in the Valley, both in Snyder county, now with 98 total deaths since the start of the pandemic. Montour County remains with 70 total deaths, Union County remains with a total of 97 county deaths, and Northumberland County remains with 395.

5,253 new statewide cases of COVID-19 were reported in Thursday’s update as well, bringing the total number of people who have contracted the disease to 1,496,399 since the pandemic began; the state says 90% of these people have recovered. The department says the state’s positivity rate is 9.6% as well, which is slightly higher than last week.

Also in Thursday’s update, there were 112 new Valley cases of COVID-19; 60 in Northumberland County (Where they’ve reached 12,112 total cases since the start of the pandemic); 30 new cases in Union County (7,140 total); eight in Snyder (4,543 total); and 14 in Montour (2,400 total).

Statewide COVID-19 hospitalization numbers went back down in Thursday’s report, with 53 more patients in hospitals statewide. Pennsylvania has a total of 2,978 COVID patients (664 in ICU and 388 on ventilators).

Locally, Geisinger Danville numbers are unchanged; they are treating a total of 72 COVID patients, with 20 in ICU and 13 on ventilators. Geisinger Shamokin is treating a total of 12, none in ICU or on ventilators. Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg is now treating a new patient for 36 total COVID patients – 27 of those are unvaccinated – six in ICU – five of those unvaccinated – one on ventilators, whom is unvaccinated.

At Valley universities, Bucknell now has 10 active cases on campus (four students, six staff) with 71 total cases since the semester began. They note that 94.3% of the students and faculty are fully vaccinated. The university updates its COVID-19 dashboard every Wednesday and Friday.

Susquehanna still has six active student cases and three active faculty cases (26 total since August 2) and the campus vaccination rate is 95.4%.

Bloomsburg reported nine new campus cases, and have reported 233 since the start of the semester.

In statewide vaccine data, more than 13.2 million total doses have been administered statewide since the pandemic began, which includes 312,485 booster doses for the immunocompromised. Over 6.3 million full vaccinations have been administered and 70% of those 18 and older are fully vaccinated.

In the Valley, 620 new doses were administered since Saturday. Northumberland County has 309 new doses, with 90,504 total doses administered (45,676 fully, 42,541 partially, 2,287 additional), Union County has 97 new doses, with 39,144 total doses administered (19,148 fully, 18,652 partially, 1,344 additional), Snyder County has 78 new doses with 30,599 total doses (15,050 fully, 14,841 partially, 708 additionally), and Montour has 136 new doses, with 25,473 total doses (12,268 partially, 12,229 fully, 976 additionally).
