Crash on Railroad Tracks in Shamokin Township

SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP — A mother and a young child were transported by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center on Saturday after their car spun out on Route 61 in Shamokin Township and landed on railroad tracks along the highway.  The News Item reports that the child was in a car seat in the back seat and the woman was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred around noon.   The woman ran off the road and the car slid down the tracks and ended up with its rear wheels between the rails. The impact of the crash tore off the front passenger wheel, which landed several yards away between the rails.

Emergency officials contacted the railroad company in case any trains were scheduled to run on the line as responders cleared the scene. The line is used by Shamokin Valley Railroad, which is part of North Shore Railroad.
