Attorney’s Office Warns of Publishers Clearing House Scam

ELYSBURG – The Northumberland County District Attorney’s office is warning of a scam involving someone pretending to represent the Publisher’s Clearing House.

The DA’s office says the incident was reported August 22, when an Elysburg resident received an envelope in the mail from Toronto, Canada that claimed to represent the Publisher’s Clearing House.

The DA’s office says in the letter was an $8,000 check, which appeared to have been issued from a legitimate Lancaster business. The letter urged the recipient to cash the check within three days and keep the matter strictly confidential, until the cash had been awarded. The DA says a local bank informed the resident it was a scam.

The DA reminds residents that being asked to “act quickly” and “tell no one” are signs of scams, and residents should report scams to the Federal Trade Commission.
