Over 17,000 New Statewide Cases, Hospitalizations Drop Below 7,000

HARRISBURG – Once again, Pennsylvania recorded fewer than 20,000 new statewide COVID-19 cases, which is significantly lower than the 20,000-30,000 daily cases in the previous weeks. This is the third straight day that number of new daily cases was below 20,000.  Additionally today, hospitalizations across the state are now below 7,000.

In Thursday’s update from the state Department of Health, they say there were 17,457 new cases reported statewide, bringing the pandemic total to 2,523,589.

In The Valley, 387 new cases have been reported since Wednesday, including 187 in Northumberland County (They’ve gone above 20,000…a total 20,186 cases since the start of the pandemic); 61 in Snyder County (7,180 total); 92 in Union County (10,402 total); and 47 in Montour (3,936 total).

The health department also says statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased slightly, 55 people, for a total of 6,962 total current patients. Of those, 1,116 are in the ICU and 694 are on ventilators.

Geisinger Danville is treating five new patients, for a total of 135 people admitted with COVID-19, 35 are in the ICU and 22 are on ventilators. Geisinger Shamokin is treating three fewer patients for a total of 19 patients, with seven in ICU and none on ventilators. Geisinger says system wide, 80.3% of its patients are unvaccinated.

Evangelical Community Hospital is treating one fewer patient, now with 42 COVID patients admitted (28 unvaccinated), with 10 in the ICU (eight unvaccinated) and two patients are on ventilators, both of whom are unvaccinated.

 

Also in Thursday’s update, the health department reported 326 new statewide COVID deaths since Wednesday (39,093 pandemic total). The Valley has three new deaths – with two in Northumberland County, now with 487 deaths since the start of the pandemic. Union County has one new death, with 136 total deaths. Snyder County remains at 135 total deaths and Montour County remains with 83 total.

Bucknell University currently reports 55 active campus cases in the first week of the spring semester, for a total of 80 so far this spring, including 16 among staff and 39 among students- and the campus has a 94.7% vaccination rate.

The state Department of Corrections says the outbreak at SCI Muncy has again worsened, now with 96 active cases, and there are now 35 active cases at SCI Coal Township.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons reports the low security campus at Allenwood has a total of 135 inmates infected there – 12 more than listed Wednesday – along with two staff members. Lewisburg federal penitentiary has a total of 85 inmates infected, along with four staff members.  The medium security campus has 15 active inmate cases. At the USP maximum security campus, there are nine active inmate cases now being reported – there’s also a staff member infected.

In the latest vaccine data, statewide, there have been 17.9 million doses administered, along with 2,908,340 additional doses. The CDC’s website says 7.6 million Pennsylvanians are fully vaccinated, and 75.1% of the 18 and older population is fully vaccinated.

According to the latest data from the Department of Human Services, Selinsgrove Center still has 11 cases among those receiving services and 33 cases among staff members. There’s also still 10 staff members infected at Danville State Hospital.
