Owners lose livestock in massive barn fire Friday morning
ROCKEFELLER TWP – Dozens of volunteer fire crews lined Ross Road in Rockefeller Township, Northumberland County Friday morning in response to a massive barn fire. The fire was reported by a passer-by at 1:26 a.m.
One of the owners of the barn, Yvonne Ross, tells WKOK she and her husband Carl were notified of the fire when the passerby pounded on their door. Ross says when they stepped outside the fire was fully engulfed.
She says fire crews arrived on the scene between 1:45 and 2 a.m. Ross says 45 calves and heifers died in the fire and nothing else could be salvaged. All that remained from the barn fire was the brick foundation and two silos are still standing.
Crews were still trying to extinguish large mounds hay which were smoldering. Ross Road was closed while crews put out the fire. Stonington Fire Chief Brian Wertz says a cause remains undetermined and a state police fire marshal has been summoned. No injuries to humans were reported. (Matt Catrillo)
